Information about Midsagittal Plane

Diagram showing sagittal, coronal and transverse planes.

The sagittal plane of the human body is an imaginary plane that travels from the top to the bottom of the body, down the midline, cutting the body into two halves of equal proportion (assuming bilateral symmetry). It divides the body into left and right portions of the same size, passing through midline structures such as the navel and spine. Planes that are parallel to the sagittal plane, but do not pass through the midline, are known as parasagittal.

Terminology

The term is derived from the Latin word Sagitta, meaning "arrow". An image of an arrow piercing a body and passing from front (anterior) to back (posterior) would demonstrate the derivation of the term.

Broader perspective

The sagittal plane is an example of a longitudinal plane, because it is perpendicular to the transverse plane.

From a broader perspective, it is one of the planes of the body used to describe the location of body parts in relation to each other. The other reference planes used in anatomy are:
  • The coronal (or frontal) plane divides the body into dorsal and ventral (back and front) portions.
  • A transverse (or horizontal) plane divides the body into cranial and caudal (top and bottom) portions.
plane is a two-dimensional manifold or surface that is perfectly flat. Informally it can be thought of as an infinitely vast and infinitesimally thin sheet oriented in some space.

navel, also called a belly button, or umbilicus, is a scar on the abdomen, caused when the umbilical cord is removed from a newborn baby. All placental mammals have a navel.

vertebral column (backbone or spine) is a column of 34 vertebrae, the sacrum, intervertebral discs, and the coccyx situated in the dorsal aspect of the torso, separated by spinal discs. It houses the spinal cord in its spinal canal.

A coronal plane (also known as the frontal plane) is any vertical plane that divides the body into ventral and dorsal (front and back) sections.

It is one of the planes of the body used to describe the location of body parts in relation to each other.

The transverse or axial plane of the human body is any imaginary slice made that cuts the body into top and bottom sections.

It is one of the planes of the body used to describe the location of body parts in relation to each other.
