- In music theory, the dominant or dominant note (second most important) of a key is that which is a perfect fifth above the tonic; in just intonation the note whose pitch is 1.5 times the frequency of the tonic note's pitch and in twelve tone equal temperament is 7 semitones or 700 cents above the tonic. This pitch can also be called the third harmonic of the harmonic series. The dominant of a church mode was the tenor or reciting tone of psalm tones. The dominant is also the diatonic function of the dominant note and chord.
- In biology and in populations, a group, pair or, or individual can be the dominant animal in a group. Dominant animals take a higher position in a "pecking order", and may be the only animals allowed to breed within a group, see dominance (biology).
- In genetics, a dominant gene is one that is expressed when heterozygous with a recessive allele of the gene. It is a feature of diseases that inherit in an autosomal dominant fashion.
- In psychology, when a body part of one side of the body is preferred over its counterpart, the body part is said to be dominant. Such body parts can include hands (handedness), eyes (ocular dominance), and feet (footedness).
- In decision theory, one estimator dominates another if it always achieves lower risk.
- In BDSM, Dominant is a more precise term for a top in BDSM - see dominant (BDSM)

In music, the dominant is the fifth degree of the scale. For example, in the C major scale (white keys on a piano, starting with C), the dominant is the note G; and the dominant chord uses the notes G, B, and D.

The tonic is the first note of a musical scale, and in the tonal method of musical composition it is extremely important. The triad formed on the tonic note, the tonic chord, is thus the most important chord.

In music, just intonation is any musical tuning in which the frequencies of notes are related by ratios of whole numbers. Any interval tuned in this way is called a just interval; in other words, the two notes are members of the same harmonic series.

An equal temperament is a musical temperament. It is a system of tuning in which every pair of adjacent notes has an identical frequency ratio. Equal temperaments are often intended to approximate some form of just intonation.

The cent is a logarithmic unit of measure used for musical intervals. Typically cents are used to measure extremely small intervals, or to compare the sizes of comparable intervals in different tuning systems, and in fact the interval of one cent is much too small to be heard

scale is an ordered series of musical intervals, which, along with the key or tonic, define the pitches. However, mode is usually used in the sense of scale applied only to the specific diatonic scales found below.
