Information about Alternative Biology
Alternative biology is the study of theoretical or non-traditional life forms such as acellular life, non-carbon-based life, extraterrestrial life, cyborg life, or artificial life.
It also considers the earliest theoretical forms of life on Earth, such as RNA life or Iron-sulfur life which may have been the earliest organisms.
Known biological entities which may not always be considered life may also be considered in alternative biology such as viruses and plasmids.

Non-cellular life is life that exists without cells. This term usually is applied to earth-based life, and presumes the phylogenetic classification of viruses as lifeforms.

Alternative biochemistry is the speculative biochemistry of alien life forms that differ radically from those on Earth. It includes biochemistries that use atoms other than carbon to construct primary cellular structures and/or use solvents besides water.

Extraterrestrial life is life originating outside of the Earth. It is the subject of astrobiology, and its existence remains theoretical. There is no evidence of extraterrestrial life that has been widely accepted by the scientific community.

The iron-sulfur world theory is a hypothesis for the origin of life advanced by Günter Wächtershäuser, a Munich chemist and patent lawyer, involving forms of iron and sulfur. Wächtershäuser proposes that an early form of metabolism predated genetics.

"Ur-organism" is the term loosely given to the hypothetical "first life" species, from which all other life presumably evolved. The term was used first by Charles Darwin, and has been picked up by various subsequent thinkers addressing the same questions of origin of species.

A plasmid is a DNA molecule separate from the chromosomal DNA and capable of autonomous replication. It is typically circular and double-stranded. It usually occurs in bacteria, sometimes in eukaryotic organisms (e.g.
