"Woman" is a song by John Lennon: it is an ode to his wife Yoko Ono, which is introduced by Lennon whispering, "For the other half of the sky ...", an expression coined by Mao.
In an interview for Rolling Stone magazine on December 5 1980, Lennon said that "Woman" was a "grown-up version" of the song "Girl".[1]
"Woman" was the second single released from the Double Fantasy album, and the first Lennon single issued after his death on December 8 1980. The B-side of the single is Ono's song "Beautiful Boys". The single debuted at #3 in the UK, then moving to #2 and finally reaching #1, where it spent 2 weeks, knocking-off the top spot Phil Collins's debut single In the Air Tonight. In the US the single spent 3 impressive weeks at #2.
The chord progression at the start of the song was used by Michael Jackson in his 1991's worldwide #1 hit Black or White.
Ozzy Osbourne recorded this song on his 2005 Under Cover compilation album.
