WFGY, Froggy 98 FM, is a Froggy branded Country music outlet serving the Altoona and State College and is owned and operated by Forever Broadcasting, LLC.
History: Beginnings as WFBG-FM
Prior to adopting the "Froggy" moniker, this station was for many years known as WFBG-FM, and was best known for being Blair County's exclusive easy-listening station, primarily automated, like others of its day. However, this would change by the start of the 90s.WFBG adopted the slogan "Froggy 98" and the new call letters, WFGY, along with a country music format. The station became known for its colorful presentation, with jingles resembling a frog's croak (or as they proclaimed "Ribbit"), as well as the even more colorful names assigned to its on-air staff. The station also promoted a family-friendly image, dubbing a "ribbit" over questionable lyrics (like the third-verse "kiss my ass" lyric in Garth Brooks' live version of "Friends in Low Places"), and did station giveaways catering to families. However, like rivial station Cat Country 106.3 from Blairsville, they not only used a ribbit over questionable lyrics, they translate that to modern day English words.
Among the on-air names used at Froggy by the DJ's over the years were Roger Ribbit, Cricket (who remains today), Web Foote, Holly Hopper, Tad Pole, Polly Wogg, and Operations Manager Steve "The Frogman" Kelsey.
WFGY has a simulcast on 98.7 MHZ with the call letters WSGY in Pleasant Gap to cover Centre County and on 106.3 MHZ with the call letters WFZY in Mount Union covering Huntingdon, Mifflin, and southeastern Juniata counties.
WFGY is the flagship station of the Froggy Radio network of stations in the region, which also includes WFGI-FM (Froggy 95.5) in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, which is a separate station from WFGY covering southwestern Pennsylvania.
Froggyland (which includes their flagship station Froggy 98.3) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which covers the Pittsburgh area, northern West Virginia, and eastern Ohio also uses the "Froggy" slogan and is extremely similar to the Forever Broadcasting stations, but is not part of the "Froggy Radio" network and is not owned by Forever Broadcasting, LLC, but rather by Keymarket.
