The United States of Colombia is the name adopted in 1863 through the Rionegro Constitution for the nation which had been known as the Republic of New Grenada since the dissolution of the federation of Great Colombia in 1830-1831 .

The nine original states that formed the confederation were Antioquia, Bolivar, Boyaca, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Panama, Santander and Tolima, and the territories of Caquetá, San Martin, Nevada and Motilones.

After several years of civil war, in 1886 the party that won the war led by Rafael Núñez proclaimed a new constitution of centralist character that abolished the United States of Colombia and created the Republic of Colombia.
