Trend Micro (TYO: 4704 ) is a global company, headquartered in Tokyo that develops software to protect against computer viruses. Steve Chang, a Taiwanese, the founder and former CEO of the company, started the company in California in 1988. Its headquarters are in Tokyo. In 2004 Chang passed leadership to Eva Chen, co-founder of Trend Micro. She was CTO from 1996 to 2004. One of her best known developments is Trend InterScan VirusWall.

Trend Micro is known for producing the PC-cillin range of anti-virus products. They also are the creator of the free, online, browser-based virus scanner, HouseCall. In order to research and inform about worldwide security threats, they have a global virus/worm response center, called TrendLabs. Its offices are located in Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, China, France, Germany, Ireland, USA, Dubai, Australia & New Zealand.

Since 2004, MSN Hotmail has been using Trend Micro to scan messages and attachments in free and Hotmail Plus accounts instead of McAfee, which has made the company more public. McAfee was then solely implemented on the MSN Premium service.

In April 2005 Trend Micro suffered a high-profile false alarm, which caused widespread computer crashes and turmoil across Asia.[1]

In May 2005 Trend Micro acquired InterMute Inc., a developer of anti-spyware products, followed in June by Kelkea Inc., an IP filtering and reputation company.

In February 2006 Trend Micro released Interscan Web Security Appliance (IWSA) which is their latest addition to the company's multi-layered approach to protecting enterprise organizations against spyware and other threats. The appliance acts as the first line of defense against threats like spyware, grayware, viruses, and phishing (More details on [1]

In February 2007 Eva Chen, has reached a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission over alleged violations. The settlement resolves alleged violations of Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 as well as Rule 10b-5 involving her spouse, Daniel Chiang, and trading in Sina Corp. securities. She neither admitted nor denied the allegations and agreed to pay a civil penalty and not to violate securities laws in the future. Also this month, they acquired HijackThis, an antispyware program from Merijn. They also maintain CWShredder, another one of Merijn's creations.

Trend Micro is on the US Federal Buying Schedule 70 through resellers Softchoice, ASAP, and Synnex.

Reception

Consumer Reports, in its September, 2007 issue, ranked Trend Micro's AntiVirus plus AntiSpyware as the best anti-malware product on the market. This was due to its detection ability, speed, and range of features. Trend Micro scans computers faster than most other products and detects viruses and spyware better than any other product as of 2007. In the September, 2006, issue, it ranked in the middle of the list. Although lacking some of the features of ZoneAlarm and McAfee, CR recommended Trend Micro and ZoneAlarm suites in its "quick picks."
