The Thiruvallauvar University was established under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002. (Tamil Nadu Act 32 of 2002) by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 16.10.2002, with an ambition and motto to empower the society with higher education.

The University is presently located in Vellore Fort, which is one of the monuments of the Vellore Town. The approximate circumference of the fort is 2600 meters. The fort is the perfect specimen of the Military Architecture in South India.

Histroy

The Thiruvalluvar University was established under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002 (Tamil Nadu Act 32 of 2002) by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 16.10.2002. The then Post Graduation Extension Centre, University of Madras, functioning at the Fort Campus, Vellore - 632 004 was extended as a University.

Objectives

The University is striving to achieve the objectives through the vision of liberating knowledge having the mission of empowering through higher education to achieve the goals of:
  1. Arousing the sense of Social Awareness
  2. Creating Stimulating Environment
  3. Encouraging Reciprocal Growth
  4. Providing with Quality Higher Education through Teaching, Research and Extension - Outreach, and
  5. Fostering Integrated Development

Aims of the University

This University is named after Thiruvalluvar was one of the greatest Tamil poets. The University aims at developing the knowledge of the students in consonance to the inscription in its emblem, கண்ணுடைய ரென்பவர் கற்றோர்,(words from Thirukkural) with the following vision and mission.

Thiruvalluvar University initially started functioning with the existing departments of the Post Graduate Extension Centre of the University of Madras :

Examinations

Non-Semester / Semester examinations for UG/PG degree students of the University Departments and affiliated colleges are conducted.

In the Second Annual Convocation, a total of 12,398 candidates received their degrees.

Financial Sources

The sources of finance for the University are grants-in-aid from the Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India and also through research schemes of Government of India and fees collected from students of affiliated colleges.
