The Jeremy Kyle Show is a daytime TV talk show filmed at Granada Television Studios in Manchester, England. The show was born out of the acrimonious departure of Trisha Goddard from ITV at the end of 2004 and first appeared on ITV in July 2005. It is repeated later in the day along with the previous days episode on ITV2 and is sometimes shown in the early hours of the morning on ITV.

Pre-history

In 2004, Trisha Goddard was reported to be stalling with ITV over renewing her contract to present the popular Trisha show. She wanted to be allowed to produce the show herself, but Granada, which owned the format, refused point blank and warned that if necessary the show would continue without her. With neither side backing down, Trisha did not renew her contract and instead moved to Five, who allowed her own production company to produce her own show which launched in January 2005.

ITV stockpiled its outstanding Trisha episodes until January 2005 and used them to spoil the launch of Trisha's new show, Trisha Goddard. But eventually, ITV's supply would run out and they decided to use the 9:25am slot for other projects, including a UK version of The People's Court. However, it was clear from the ratings that viewers expected to see a Trisha-style show at that time, so Jerry Springer was drafted in to host an interim talk show The Springer Show until a permanent replacement could be found. The Jeremy Kyle Show was at first shown in tandem with The Springer Show until August that year. Since then it has been the sole occupier of ITV's weekday 9:25am slot. Early episodes of The Jeremy Kyle Show followed up the stories of guests who had originally appeared on The Springer Show.

The show

The show usually involves couples or families who appear on the show to present their partner or family member with a problem that they would like to be resolved. Lie detectors (polygraphs) and DNA tests are often used on the show when one of the couple or family is suspected of lying. Jeremy Kyle himself usually talks through the problem and mediates with all the parties involved and tries to help them reach a solution. When the problem is an addiction or mental health problem, Jeremy Kyle usually offers backstage and after-show support such as AA meetings, "gamblers anonymous" groups and counsellors employed by the show - among them his resident psychotherapists Claire Evans (Series 1) and subsequently Graham Stanier. The latter is often referred to by Kyle as either a "genius" or "Mr Magic" for his ability to make even the most intransigent guest see sense.

A notable feature of The Jeremy Kyle Show is that when an 'unpopular' guest such as a drug addict, alcoholic or unfaithful partner walks into the studio, Jeremy Kyle tells the audience not to boo them, as the person has shown a lot of courage to come on to the show and appear on national television; they are obviously interested in sorting out their problems or they would not have agreed to appear in the first place. It is worth to note that members of the production team 'brief' the audience prior to entering the studio about the four main topics which will be featured on the program for the recording and additionally, they state that booing and jeering is highly encouraged. There is also a backstage camera, which shows the reaction of the guests that have not entered the studio yet to what is being said on-stage. Jeremy sometimes loses his cool, and begins shouting vitriolic statements at the junkie or 'love rat'. At this point any response from the guest will be drowned out by the applause of the audience.

When relatives or friends of the primary guests enter the stage (having heard what has been said onstage), they usually enter in an uncivilised manner, shouting "YOU...ARE A LIAR!" or going up to assault one of the other guests.

"The DNA test results show... GROW UP! YOU ARE THE FATHER!"

Fights frequently break out on the show, however the fights are not shown on television, instead the camera cuts away to show the audience and Jeremy Kyle’s reaction and returns once the situation has been controlled by the near-by security personnel (one of them comically known as 'Gaz').

The show was given a new logo and on screen identity in April 2006.

The show has attracted a cult following, and many of Kyle's fans can recite his catchphrases.

The show has been the subject of parody by the BBC's Dead Ringers.

In October 2007, BBC Two began broadcasting The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle, a sit-com starring and co-written by Jennifer Saunders. The show makes no reference to Jeremy Kyle, yet it is clearly a parody of his show and private lifestyle.[1]

Show History

The Jeremy Kyle Show suffered a bad launch week on ITV. The edition on Thursday 7 July was interrupted for rolling coverage of the unfolding London tube bombings. The following day's edition was not broadcast as coverage of the bombings continued. Earlier in the week, it's believed a transmission breakdown disrupted one of the first three shows.[2]

Criticism

On 24 September 2007, a Manchester district Judge, Alan Berg, was charged with sentencing a man who headbutted his love rival while appearing on The Jeremy Kyle Show. Judge Berg was reported in the Manchester Evening News as saying: "I have had the misfortune, very recently, of watching The Jeremy Kyle Show.

"It seems to me that the purpose of this show is to effect a morbid and depressing display of dysfunctional people whose lives are in turmoil".

He added that it was "a plain disgrace which goes under the guise of entertainment".

"It should not surprise anyone that these people, some of whom have limited intellects, become aggressive with each other.

"This type of incident is exactly what the producers want. These self-righteous individuals should be in the dock with you. They pretend there is some kind of virtue in putting out a show like this," said Judge Berg.[3]

An ITV spokesman responded by saying "The programme never encourages or tolerates violence". Jeremy Kyle himself responded by saying: "Some people will always think I've got the eyes of Satan. Others will think I'm a TV God. People have the right to criticise. Sometimes people need to be stripped bare before they can be helped".[4]

On 26 September 2007 Judith Woods, writing in the Daily Telegraph argued "that this tacky, tawdry show demeans us all". (Issue 47,373)

Finally on 29 September 2007:, the government-backed sponsors of The Jeremy Kyle Show cancelled their £500,000-a-year deal over concerns about its content. Ufi, which runs the Learndirect adult learning service, said continuing the deal would not "protect and enhance" its reputation.[5] However, the sponsor of the show in Scotland is Shades' Blinds, who have retained their association with the programme.

The weekend newspaper columnists exchanged mixed views about The Jeremy Kyle Show. Fiona Phillips, writing in the Daily Mirror on 29 September 2007, accused Judge Berg of being out of touch and claimed those appearing on the programme knew exactly what they were letting themselves in for.[6] However, Carole Malone at sister publication the Sunday Mirror claimed Kyle was only interested in helping his own ego.[7]
