Syosset High School, located on Southwoods Road in Syosset, New York, USA is the only high school for residents of the Syosset Central School District.

The school was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1992-1993. The school district as a whole was also the 2002 winner of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association Award, which honors school districts for excellence in arts education. The school was also named a Grammy Signature school in recognition of its superior music education programs. It recently was rated fourteenth in the country for music education by the National Association for Music Education. [2]

SHS's publications The Pulse (school newspaper) and Ken (literary magazine) have won many awards. Its Forensics Speech & Debate team has taken home both state and national championships. The school also has strong Model United Nations and Model Congress teams. Syosset High School is also known for its National Champion Quiz Bowl team. In April 2007 the team finished off a near perfect Quiz Net season with a victory in the national championship.[3] The Science Olympiad Team has also competed at the state level numerous times.

SHS offers a wide range of courses, including many Advanced Placement courses and Syracuse University courses, offered through SU Project Advance. Syosset High School has the top ranked varsity golf team on Long Island as well. It is one of the few schools on Long Island to give a Russian Regents; Japanese and Latin also have multi-year programs. It also boasts a three-year research program in which students enter competitions such as the Intel Science Talent Search.

WKWZ

WKWZ, 88.5 FM, is an FCC-licensed broadcasting station owned and operated by the Syosset Central School District that operates from 2:30-11:00 PM Monday through Friday. WPOB broadcasts on the same frequency from 7:00-2:30 from Plainview Old Bethpage JFK High School, and is the sister station to WKWZ. The General Manager is head of the Syosset Film and Radio department, Dave Favilla, with all other positions (other than General Manager, Station Supervisor and Chief Engineer) operated by students in the school, with positions such as Station Manager(s), Music Director, Sports Director, Traffic Director, Program Director, Community News Director, and Organizational Supervisor(s).

Athletics

  • Head Coach John Calabria was named, by Newsday, Nassau County Coach of the Year and All-American Junior Jeff Cohen was named to the Newsday All-Long Island Team. [4]

  • Syosset Running Braves holds the 4by800 national indoor high school record of 7:42.22, when it was broken back in Feb. 2005. The four runners were Adam Lampert, Chris Howell, Sean Tully, and Dan Tully.
  • The Syosset Running Braves have accomplished 10 consecutive county champs in cross country from 1996 to 2006.
  • The Syosset Braves Swim Team were the Nassau County Champions of 2003 and have consistently sent swimmers to the New York State sponsored meet.
