"Some Girls" is the third single from Funky Dory, the debut solo album by Rachel Stevens, released in the summer of 2004. It was produced by Richard X, and received a mixed reception from pop-music critics. The song was the official charity single for Sport Relief 2004 in the UK.

The song

"Some Girls" was Stevens' chance to save her career, after the chart failures of her debut album Funky Dory and her second single of the same name. Stevens and her manager, Simon Fuller, heard a demo version of the song and contacted Richard X and Hannah Robinson, wanting to record it as Stevens' comeback single. An unidentified singer/group from Warp records had also heard the song and wanted to record it, but when her management suggested that it could be released as a charity single for Sport Relief, Stevens was given the song.

In the song Stevens sings about going along with the wishes of a man who promises her the earth but never delivers, while "dreams of number one" keep her faithful. Multiple interviews have suggested to Stevens that the song is about blow jobs, which Stevens and the songs co-writers have not confirmed. It is more likely that the song is referring to some women who have sex with high executives in order to get a job or position. [1]

Music video

The music video for "Some Girls" was written by Richard Curtis and directed by Paul Weiland. It was filmed at Borough Market in Central London.

The video has three sequences; the first sequence has Stevens walking through a sewer underground area and dancing with her dancers and signing; then Stevens and her dancers find the exit from the sewer and climb onto the streets still singing and dancing while walking down the road, soon more and more girls follow Stevens, who is leading the crowd; then the party begins and water is being sprayed all over the crowd of people; the video end with Stevens leaving the streets from the same way she entered. The video also shows Colin Jackson and two other celebrities.

Richard X briefly comments on the video on his official website stating that it "made [him] want to give up [his] life" [1].

Cover Versions

In 2007, an up-and-coming American dance vocalist named Henri remade the track as a follow-up to her 2006 kickoff single "When You Walk Away." Henri's version of "Some Girls" has already garnered healthy attention online and from DJs; it is currently at number 6 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic charts.

Charts

Hopes were high that the single would perform well on the charts after the failures of both Stevens' debut album and second single, "Funky Dory". In its debut week in the UK, "Some Girls" sold over 43,000 copies, charted and peaked at number two, spending twelve weeks in the Top 75 singles chart and selling over 130,000 copies in total. The song was also a success of the UK download chart, peaking at number eight.

In the 2004 year-end charts in the UK, "Some Girls" was ranked at number forty.
