SanomaWSOY is the leading media group in the Nordic countries with operations in 20 European countries, based in Helsinki. The group is also among the top five European magazine publishers and has a strong position, in addition to its native Finland, in the Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Russia.

The group has an annual turnover of 2,742 million euros[1] (2006) and employs an average of 18,434 people. SanomaWSOY was formed in 1999 with the merger of Sanoma Corporation, WSOY (Werner Söderström Osakeyhtiö; Werner Söderström Corporation) and Helsinki Media Company.

SanomaWSOY consists of five divisions:
  • Sanoma Magazines Magazine publishing, online operations and press distribution
  • Sanoma Newspaper publishing, online operations and printing
  • SanomaWSOY Education and Books Educational publishing and publishing
  • SWelcom Electronic media
  • Rautakirja Press distribution, kiosk operations, bookstores and entertainment
SanomaWSOY's stock is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. Its biggest owners include Aatos Erkko and other members of the Erkko family. The newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that was founded in 1889 as Päivälehti is one of the single most significant products of the group.
