"Rock with You" was a successful single released by singer Michael Jackson in late 1979. The original title was "I Want to Eat You Up", but it was quickly changed to fit Jackson's image. On February 27, 2006, "Rock with You" was re-released as a single as part of the box set. It reached number fifteen in the UK Singles Chart in March 2006.

History

"Rock with You" was released as the second single from Jackson's fifth solo LP and breakthrough album, Off the Wall. The song, written by Heatwave group member and songwriter Rod Temperton, helped Jackson score one of the first Billboard number-one singles in the 1980s, as well as one of the last big hit songs of the disco era, as by early 1980, disco was showing signs of waning in appeal and popularity. A video for the song showed a smiling Jackson lip-synching to the video in a sequined suit against a background of multi-colored strobe lights. The song reached number one on both the pop and R&B singles chart and became one of Jackson's most-loved songs.

Cover versions

The song was later covered by singer Brandy in 1995 for Quincy Jones' album, Q's Jook Joint. It was also covered by Ashanti in 2005 as a remix to her single "Rock With Me (Aww Baby)" and performed at the BET Awards.

Mixes

  1. Album version – 3:39
  2. Album version #2 – 3:39 - Some instruments are mixed differently. This version was used for the 7"/Video edit.
  3. Video/7" edit – 3:23
  4. Masters at Work Remix – 5:29
  5. Frankie's Favorite Club Mix – 7:49
  6. Frankie's Radio Mix

The Masters at Work Remix and Frankie Knuckles remixes both contain unreleased vocals and ad-libs not heard on the album version. This is because the remixers were given access to the "master tapes" of the song to produce their remix. The master tapes contained additional vocals and cuts that didn't make it on the final album version.
