Information about Museology

Museology (also called museum studies) is the study of how to organize and manage museums and museum collections. More generally, museum studies is a term used to denote academic programs, generally graduate programs, in the management, administration, or theory of museums.

Academic institutions offer degrees in museology.

In the United Kingdom, the University of Leicester, the University of Manchester and University College London (UCL) offer Museum Studies courses. Among the leading programs in the US are the Cooperstown Graduate Program, (SUNY Oneonta), Winterthur (University of Delaware), George Washington University, and John F. Kennedy University.

A variety of careers exist within the discipline of museum studies, including Museum director, curator, educator, docent, graphic designer, exhibit designer, archivist and conservation specialist.
