The Super Mario Bros. series is a series of platform games featuring Mario and Luigi.

Overview

Super Mario Bros. games are platformers. In the games, the player usually kills enemies by jumping on them. Power-ups such as fire flowers and super mushrooms power-up the player by allowing them to throw fireballs and grow big, respectively.

The most common theme in the games is Bowser, the main antagonist of the series kidnapping Princess Peach, whom Mario must save.

The game's levels are usually divided into different worlds, each with a certain number of stages.

These games undergo considerable changes as the series progresses, most notably in Super Mario World as a result of a change of game play to 16-bit on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, as well as the introduction of Yoshi the dinosaur, and on Super Mario 64 with the introduction of 3D game play on the Nintendo 64.

Although it was the third and second game, respectively, to feature Mario and Luigi, Super Mario Bros. is the first game to use "Super Mario Bros." in the title and the first in the series. This game was a pack-in game with the Nintendo Entertainment System. Super Mario Bros. 2 (called in the United States) is often called the first sequel to Super Mario Bros., though that honor belongs to Super Mario Bros. Special. The Lost Levels was only released in Japan, and was not available in Europe or the U.S. until 1993's compilation Super Mario All-Stars. A condensed version was also available in the later Super Mario Bros. DX. Special, however, was only released for an obscure Japanese computer.

The American/European Super Mario Bros. 2 features a very different aspect of play than its predecessor, and was originally a separate game called . It is also the first playable appearance of Toad and Princess Peach. Super Mario Bros. 3 is the first game of the series to feature board maps.

Super Mario World is the first game to feature Yoshi. Though not bearing the Super Mario Bros. name, in Japan it is sometimes titled Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4 [1].

Super Mario 64 was the first game released for Nintendo's new platform: The Nintendo 64. Featuring a new 3D world it was considered a revolution in the series and on the game industry[2], although the series formula did not change completely. It mainteined the levels style and the board map was replaced for a castle with several rooms and floors.

New Super Mario Bros. was the first game in the series to be released on a handheld system (the Nintendo DS) since Super Mario Land 2 for the Game Boy.

Super Mario Galaxy will be released for the Wii November 12 2007. This game is one of the few games in the series to be set outside the Mushroom Kingdom. This is the third game to be 3-dimensional. In this game Mario travels to outer space to rescue Princess Peach from King Bowser where he finds completely round planets that he can fully walk around. Originally from Super Mario 64, Mario will also collect Stars in this game.

Remakes and re-releases

The Super Mario Bros. series is also noted for having many of it's games remade. Some games have also been remade in the Classic NES series.

Note that some games of the series were remade in a 4-in-1 package entitled Super Mario All-Stars, then a Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World package was released, including Super Mario World.

In addition, the aforementioned games (except for Super Mario Bros. 3) have seen re-releases through Virtual Console. The original versions of each game have been available for download.

Super Mario in other media and video games

The series launched a film, Super Mario Bros., that was considered a flop. The series also had a number of animes, mangas, TV series and comics based of the games off the series.

In addition to the series, Mario has appeared in a variety of video games including the Super Smash Bros. series, Mario Kart series and the Mario Party series along with a variety of others
