Reputation
Korea University is one of the so-called "SKY" schools in Korea. The acronym is the first initials of the three most prestigious and highly selective universities in Korea: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. It means similar to "HYP" of U.S. :Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University .([10])Academics
Korea University was put under the spotlight when it became one of the world’s top 200 universities. The Times, in its Higher Education Supplement, ranked Korea University 184th in the world. Social Sciences at Korea University ranked 66th while Liberal Arts ranked 89th. In 2006, a newer version of the world university ranking was released by the Times, and Korea University's ranking leaped up to 150th from the previous rank of 184th. Page 3 in The Times University Ranking 2006. [11] The Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announced that Korea university ranked 153rd in the world and 4th in Korea, based on the number of published papers in Science Citation Index journals [12]. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, Korea University ranked in the range of 301-400th [13]. In 2007, the Korean Ministry of Education, after assessing domestic MBA programs, named Korea University as the top MBA program in Korea [14]. The business programs at Korea University also obtained international recognition by acquiring Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) certifications in both undergraduate- and graduate levels and European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) for the first time in Korea, qualifying for what are considered to be two of the world's highest regarded certifications for business educational assessment [15].Athletics
The rivalry of Korea University and Yonsei University, top two private institutions in the nation, is nationally renowned. These private universities are proud of and renowned for their spirit, traditions, and the gold balance of academics and athletics. So intense is the rivalry between them that any of the crimson-attired supporters of Korea University identifies the league as the “Ko-Yon Games,” while the opponent party in blue would call it the other way around. Five events (of baseball, basketball, ice hockey, rugby, and soccer) are held every year. [16]Global KU Project
KU has carried out ‘Global KU Project’ whose aim is to get in the world’s top 100 schools by 2010 [17].
Internationalisation
In 2003, Korea University was the only university in the nation recognised for outstanding achievement in internationalisation. This evaluation of 121 domestic universities was conducted by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and included a competitive application process and strict on-site inspections. KU received high marks for its emphasis on the standardisation of English through expansion of English-mediated courses and innovative projects for globalisation. In 2006, Jooang Ilbo which is one of the major Korean newspapers put Korea University to the 2nd rank in the most globalized Korean universities, next to KAIST [18], [19]. This is the result of the determination and drive of the university to reach its goal of becoming a world-renowned university. The Global KU Project is now being more actively pursued than ever before, with the active recognition and financial support of the Korean government.Notable alumni
