The Kia Spectra, or Kia Cerato, is a compact car / small family car produced by the Korean automaker Kia Motors since 2000. It is currently Kia's top-selling vehicle in the United States.

First generation (2000-2004)

When introduced for the 2000 model year for Korea and the United States, it was a hatchback version of the Kia Sephia and Kia Shuma (pronounced Shü-mä´), and replaced the Avella. It was developed from Kia's previous hatchback, the Mentor (Sephia Leo). Several years later, Kia reveals the minor redesigned model. Renamed as Spectra Wing / Shuma II. It's successor is also the Kia Cerato as the Spectra / Sephia II models. The Shuma was powered 1.5 L and 1.8 L fuel injected four-cylinder petrol engines and its £8,500 starting price was £3,000 less than the approximately equivalent Ford Focus. In 2002 it replaced the Sephia and Shuma completely, though it was the same vehicle. In Russia production of first-gen Spectra is continued by Izh-Avto.
  • Kia Shuma/Spectra 2000-2004 performance:

Second generation (2005-present)

The 2005 redesign shares the platform of the Hyundai Elantra. The hatchback version is called the Spectra5, and is known as the Kia Cerato in Korea. The car is offered in the European and North American markets, and has a wide range of engines: four for Europe and two for the other markets. Is also sold in Chile.

The 2005 model uses Hyundai's Beta II G4GC (CVVT-enabled) engine (see Hyundai Beta engine).

Trivia

  • Top Gear claimed that the Cerato "sounds like a broken musical instrument". In a Season 8 episode of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond went on a 'caravanning holiday' to understand the European idea of using caravans (which Top Gear have a reputation for destroying) for leisure. They used a Kia Cerato diesel as a tow car, due to its being chosen as "2006 Tow Car of the Year," and felt it was not up to the job of towing a caravan, as, at full throttle, it reached only 30 mph (0 km/h). Driven by May, the Cerato and its caravan managed to destroy another campsite and failed to do a 3-point turn (becoming a 37-plus-point turn), and was crashed into a bollard, lamp-post, and, very nearly, Hammond. After the caravan (and aforementioned neighboring campsite) was burnt down by a chip pan fire, the team used the Kia Cerato to tow its scorched shell away.
  • The Spectra Sedan won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Economy Car award for 2005.
  • The Cerato is produced for the Chinese market by the Dongfeng Yueda Kia Automobile Company, a joint venture with Kia.
  • Using legal definitions of vehicle size class, 2007 Kia Spectra5 has interior volume index of 3297L (116.4 cu.ft)http://www.kia.ca/specs.asp?lang=en&plate=spectra5, while 2007 Kia Rio5 has interior volume index of 3508L (123.9 cu.ft)http://www.kia.ca/specs.asp?lang=en&plate=rio5, which makes Kia Rio5 a bigger vehicle size class than Kia Spectra5 under North American regulations.
