Information about Ikoyi
Ikoyi is the name of neighbourhood that forms part of the city of Lagos in Nigeria.
Lying at the edge of Lagos Lagoon, Ikoyi was once an island which was separated from Lagos Island by a narrow waterway which was dug by the British during colonial times to split Lagos Island into two. The creek has now been built over or filled so that the two islands are fused together again. It is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by Victoria Island and the broad sand spit running east down the coast.
In the colonial period, the island was developed as a residential cantonment for the expatriate British community and still retains many of the large colonial residences built between 1900 and 1950.
Upmarket residential properties continued to be built after the colonial period, and the Island and its Dodan Barracks became the residence of some of Nigeria's military rulers. Ikoyi now contains many other government buildings as well as hotels, schools, Ikoyi Park, and the famous golf course, the Ikoyi Club 1938.
Despite the lack of constant electricy, pipe borne water and a general decay in basic infrastructure, Ikoyi is thought to have the most expensive real estate in Africa.
