Human Head was founded in 1997 by a group of six developers formerly from Raven Software--Chris Rhinehart, Paul MacArthur, Shane Gurno, Ben Gokey, James Sumwalt, and Ted Halsted -- later joined by game producer Tim Gerritsen. Human Head's first game was Rune, a third-person Viking action game.
In July 2006, Human Head released the long-anticipated first person shooter Prey to critical acclaim. The game had been in development for five years, and was executive produced by 3D Realms.
In 2002 Human Head established a branch internal to the company dedicated to the development of non-electronic games, including role-playing games, board games and card games. The first release from this branch, The Redhurst Academy of Magic Student Handbook, won an Origins Award in 2003.
The Adventure Games Division was headed by Matt Forbeck from its inception in 2002. When, in late 2004, Matt left the company to pursue full-time freelance work, the position of Director was filled by Jason L Blair, creator of the award-winning roleplaying game Little Fears - The Roleplaying Game of Childhood Terror and WYRD IS BOND - The Game of Urban Myth and Magic.
On April 20, 2007, a news report indicated that the company's headquarters were at least partially destroyed in a fire.[1] No injuries were reported.
