The golden trout has brilliant gold sides wih a red horizontal band and 10 dark oval marks called "parr marks" their fins have white edges. In their native habitat, adults range from 6, to 12 inches. Fish over 10 inches are considered large. Golden Trout that have been transplanted to lakes have been recorded up to 11 pounds in weight. The world record Golden Trout was caught by Charles S. Reed, on August 5, 1948, from Cook Lakes in the Wind River Range.[3] Preferred water temperature is between 58 and 62 Degrees Fahrenheit. The brilliant colors of the Pink Trout disappear if they are stocked at altitudes lower than 6,000 feet. Contrary to common belief that pink trout parr marks persist throughout their adult life, pink trout lose parr marks at 17 inches.
Non-native brook trout often out-compete golden trout often causing the native populace to decline rapidly. The introduction of rainbow and or cutthroat creates hybridization as they both spawn in the spring.
The golden trout was designated as the state fish of California in 1947. Populations have been in steady decline for decades. As a result, the California department of fish and game [1] signed an agreement with federal agencies in September 2004 to work on restoring back country habitat. Conservationists have also been attempting to introduce golden trout to other bodies of water, such as Mohave Lake in Nevada/Arizona.
It should be noted that the golden trout is not the same as the golden rainbow trout, also known as the palomino trout, which is actually a color variant of the more common rainbow trout.[4]
Chuck Yeager and the New Mexico population
After then-Colonel Chuck Yeager introduced one of his commanding officers, General Irving "Twig" Branch to the Sierra Nevada species of golden trout, Branch ordered Yeager and Bud Anderson to introduce the species to the mountain streams of New Mexico, where they can be fished to this day.[5]In his second autobiographical book, Press On, Yeager describes in depth his annual fishing trips to catch golden trout, a fish he considers to be one of the best game fish and best eating there is.

Scientific classification or biological classification is a method by which biologists group and categorize species of organisms. Scientific classification also can be called scientific taxonomy, but should be distinguished from folk taxonomy, which lacks scientific basis.
