First awarded in 1986, the Geminis celebrate the achievements of TV members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. Essentially, it presents awards for the best television productions in Canada. Awards are currently presented in 87 categories.
November 19, 2005 was also proclaimed to be "Gemini Awards Day" by the Toronto City Council.
The Gemini Awards also include several special awards given out for various reasons such as lifetime achievement.
Normally held in Toronto, the 2006 ceremony was held in Richmond, BC on Saturday, November 4, 2006.
Quebec holds its own counterpart of the Geminis, Les Prix Gémeaux.
The 2007 awards will be held in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Margaret Collier Award
Each year the Academy presented a writer with the Margaret Collier Award for their lifetime achievement.- See also: Margaret Collier Award
John Drainie Award
This award is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to broadcasting in Canada. It is presented at the discretion of the Academy, not necessarily every year.- See also: John Drainie Award
Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism
This award is presented to a Broadcast Journalist for an exceptional body of work in Canadian television journalism, or for significant contribution to the international profile of Canadian television journalism.Donald Brittain Award
A Gemini Award presented to the show voted the best social/political documentary program.Humanitarian Award
Starting in 2001, this award recognizes humanitarian efforts that improve the quality of people's lives and reduce suffering. The Gemini Humanitarian Award celebrates the efforts of an individual within the Canadian television industry, whose contributions and commitments to the community and public service exemplify compassion and humanitarianism outside of the television industry. The recipients receive a Gemini statuette and $10 000 CND.So far the list of recipients is as follows

Academy Achievement Award
This is the Gemini's true Lifetime Achievement Award. It is presented at the discretion of the Academy (not necessarily every year, but since its inception there has never been a year without it). It was first presented in 1996.- See also: Academy Achievement Award
Multiculturalism Award & Canada Award
Called the Multiculturalism Award from 1988-1990 and the Canada Award from 1992 onward. This Award is presented to the television program that best reflects Canada's multicultural landscape. Since the award's inception, National Film Board of Canada productions and co-productions have won approximately half of all Canada Awards, including the 2005 winner, Two Worlds Colliding by Tasha Hubbard.Categories
