Information about Free Union

This article is about a union between two persons that has no religious or civil recognition. For the village of Free Union, Virginia, see Free Union, Virginia.

A free union is a union between two persons that lacks any publicly recognized bond (either civil or religious)[1].

The phrase "free union" is misleading, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church raises the question of what "union" can mean in the phrase "free union". The expression "free union" includes situations such as concubinage, rejection of marriage as such, or inability to make long-term commitments.[2] According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, being in a "free union" is a grave offense against the dignity of marriage.[3]
