The Swallow-tailed Hummingbird (Eupetomena macroura) is a species in the Trochilidae family, the hummingbirds. It is the only species in its genus, Eupetomena, and is named for its swallow-like tail.

It is found in central–southeastern Brazil, eastern Caatingan Brazil and the Amazon River outlet region with French Guiana; also northern Amazonian Bolivia and Paraguay, and locales of Guianan Highlands Suriname, areas of Peru and the Madeira River in southwestern Amazonia.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, dry savanna, and heavily degraded former forest.

Amazon Basin range

The major range of Swallow-tailed Hummingbird is the Caatinga of Northeast, Brazill, and also the northern parts of the Cerrado, and to the east, the entire central-eastern and central-southeastern, coastal Brazil, Center-West, Brazil—Southeast, Brazil to the state of São Paulo.

To the west, the range encompasses the upstream reaches of the southern Amazon Basin in the southwest, in an 800km wide strip; also upstream parts of the southeastern quadrant. In the east this includes the upstream headwaters of the adjacent Tocantins-Araguaia River drainage and the drainage adjacent to the west, the Xingu River, the final southeast drainage to the Amazon.

For the west, in the southwestern quadrant of the Amazon Basin, the Swallow-tailed Hummingbird is found in only northern regions of Amazonian Bolivia, and a small region of Peru's southeast border; the northern limit of its range in Bolivia is the Bolivia-Brazil border, the Mamoré-Guaporé River drainage.

Besides this southern perimeter area of the Amazon Basin, the hummingbird's range extends 1800km along the Atlantic coastal Amazon to its northern limit, (Amapá state Brazil and eastern French Guiana), and goes upstream on the Amazon River in a 250km strip, about 1900km.
