The Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects has been a category for television shows, miniseries, and TV movies since 1984. From 1984 to 1997 it was known as Outstanding Individual Achievement in Special Visual Effects. In 1998, the category was split in two—Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series and Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Miniseries, Movie or Special.
