Information about David Grene

David Grene (April 13, 1913 - September 10, 2002) was a professor of classics at the University of Chicago from 1937 until his death. He was a co-founder of the Committee on Social Thought and is best known for his translations of ancient Greek literature.

Grene was born in Dublin, where he earned his M.A. in 1936 at Trinity College. His translations include Herodotus' Histories, Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound and Seven Against Thebes, Sophocles' Oedipus the King, Electra, and Philoctetes, and Euripides' Hippolytus.

A memoir by Grene titled Of Farming and Classics was published posthumously by the University of Chicago Press in 2006. Grene, a friend and colleague of prolific author Saul Bellow, is also the father of Gregory Grene, lead singer and accordionist for Irish jig-punk band The Prodigals.
