Celebrity Deathmatch is a claymation parody television show that pits celebrities against each other in a wrestling ring, almost always ending in the loser's gruesome death. It is known for its excessive amount of blood used in every match and exaggerated physical injuries (e.g., one person pulls off a participant's foot, living through decapitations, impalements, etc.).

The series was created by Eric Fogel. It aired on MTV from May 14, 1998 to October 20, 2002, and lasted for a 75 episode run. There was one special that didn't contribute to the final episode total, entitled Celebrity Deathmatch Hits Germany, which aired on June 21, 2001. Professional wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin gave voice to his animated form as the guest commentator. Early in 2003, a movie was announced by MTV to be in the making, but the project was canceled by the end of that very same year.

In 2005, MTV2 announced the revival of the show as part of their Sic 'Em Friday programming block. Originally set to return in November 2005, the premiere was pushed back to June 10, 2006 as part of a new Sic'emation block with two other animated shows, Where My Dogs At and The Adventures of Chico and Guapo. The show's fifth season was produced by Cuppa Coffee Studios and the premiere drew over 2.5 million viewers becoming MTV2's highest rated season premiere ever.

Present main characters

  • Johnny Gomez (Maurice Schlafer (1998-2002), Jim Thornton (2006-present)): Co-commentator on Celebrity Deathmatch, Johnny is the more professional one, and a loyal friend of Nick's despite his constant blunders and once was heard to say, "Be patient Johnny. Only 35 Years till retirement." Johnny's hair has noticeably changed from black to brown in the new season. Judging by a comment made by Tally Wong during one episode, he may have gone bald during the show's cancellation, and is now wearing a toupee.''
  • Nick Diamond (Len Maxwell (1998-2002), Chris Edgerly (2006-present)): Co-commentator on Celebrity Deathmatch and a divorced father of one, he is always screwing up. He dislikes interviewer Debbie Matenopoulos intensely, and has also won several matches of Celebrity Deathmatch himself (most notably against an alien in a Halloween special episode). The first episode of the new season seemingly shows Nick as having received breast implants (He later reported of getting the implants later on in the new season). In later episodes, however, his breasts vanished as if it never happened.
  • Mills Lane (Mills Lane (1998-2002), Chris Edgerly (2006-present)): The referee on Celebrity Deathmatch; he always starts matches by saying "Let's get it on!" and shows that this is one ref you can't knock down with one hit. Another catch phrase is when there is a disputable move by either fighter, like using foreign objects, and he says "I'll allow it!", implying that just about anything is legal in the ring. Due to his suffering a stroke in 2002 that affected his voice drasticly, Mills no longer voices his own character.
  • Tally Wong (Masasa Moyo): The new interviewer from Season 5 onward. Before most of the matches, she interviews the combatants in a segment called 'Tally's Korner'. Tally is very self-centered, and usually spends most of her interviews insulting the celebrities rather than asking questions. She often makes rude remarks about the celebrities, and at times Nick and Johnny, during matches. Whenever Nick or Johnny gets mad at her for it, she taunts them by daring them to "bring back Stacey Cornbred." Tally severely dislikes Johnny Gomez.

Former main characters

  • "Stone Cold" Steve Austin (himself): World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Wrestler and regular guest commentator on Celebrity Deathmatch. Also the scientist, doctor and weapons expert on the show, he is a fan favorite. He also fought and won a grudge match against Vince McMahon (voiced by McMahon himself, and whom Austin would actually wrestle with on several WWF events in real life). Apparently, Austin may not show up in the newer seasons, for Nick has once stated that he was too expensive to bring back.
  • Debbie Matenopoulos (herself): Third Interviewer on Celebrity Deathmatch. She dislikes Nick, and doesn’t prepare for any interviews, usually just asking whatever she feels like. She often believes herself to be smarter than she really is. A lot of the other characters don't like her.
  • Stacey Cornbred, (Mz. L): A second interviewer on Celebrity Deathmatch, Stacey was much more professional than Debbie, and more liked. She spontaneously combusted. Later, she briefly returned from the dead as an animated corpse to challenge Debbie in the ring only to be soundly (and messily) defeated. Tally Wong made a small reference to Stacey in the Season 5 finale when she lost her temper while on camera. Tally Wong has mentioned bringing her back again in the new season.
  • Marv Albert (Himself): CDM's first interviewer. He only appeared in three episodes before being replaced with Stacey Cornbred. Best recognized for wasting one show watching the slow-motion replay of Pamela Anderson's implant-laden breasts jiggle repeatedly (Let's see that again...Let's see that again...Let's see that again...).

Minor characters

  • The Masked Man (Chris Edgerly): Appearing in the first two episodes of the 2006 season, the true identity of the Masked Man is shrouded in mystery. In both his appearances, the Masked Man has appeared in a seemingly one-sided match and attacked the winning celebrity. Even though in both matches he has appeared in, he has managed to render his opponent completely helpless, he always runs away after suffering a single blow. He is quite obviously supposed to be Michael Jackson, as his pale skin, high-pitched voice, eccentric dance moves, and habit of seductively leering towards small boys are all dead giveaways. Despite this, Nick and Johnny cannot seem to identify who he really is.
  • The Popcorn Vendor (voice unknown): The name pretty much sums up his job. Basically, he's something of a running gag, as he is usually among the first victims in the audience when a Deathmatch gets too brutal to stay in the ring. The vendor has been burned, chopped up, and even possessed by a demon at various points, only to come back again healthy in his next appearance.
  • Nicky Diamond Jr., (Brendan Muller): Nick's son, who appeared in several episodes. In one episode he was possessed by a demon called "Captain Doody," but was delivered when The Undertaker executed a Tombstone Piledriver on the possessed Nicky during their bout, causing the demon to leave Nicky and enter the hapless popcorn salesman.
  • Zatar the Alien (Eric Fogel): Zatar The Alien is a green, one eyed alien who has a habit of wagging his tail. He appeared in two episodes. In the "37th Annual Sci-Fi Night", he killed Celine Dion (after possessing her), Keith Flint, Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew. After killing the latter two, an enraged Nick Diamond comes down to the ring and defeats Zatar by ripping his brain out through his eye. Later, at the end of the episode "Deathcon 2001", he destroyed the arena with an Independence Day-style laser blast from his spaceship.
  • Marilyn Manson (himself): The controversial rockstar is the undisputed champion of Celebrity Deathmatch. He was featured on the original Celebrity Deathmatch short where he fought and defeated Charles Manson. He has also defeated The Spice Girls, Hanson, Garth Brooks, and Ricky Martin. Manson provided his voice for most of the episodes he was featured in.
  • The Machine (Eric Fogel): The Machine is a former kitchen robot that had been reprogrammed by "Stone Cold" Steve Austin to fight the popular rock band Rage Against the Machine during episode 11 (In The Head Of Nicky Jr.) of the third season.
  • Jack the Ripper (Chris Edgerly): The Ripper appeared in episode "Time Traveling (Part 2)" in a fight against Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. He killed Watson by stabbing him, slicing him in half, forcing him to eat British cooking, and cutting off his head. At the end of the match, Sherlock closed the Ripper's cloak on him, which was full of knives and swords, and thus was impaled and killed.
  • Mr. T (Himself): Mr. T appeared several times throughout the series in the audience and in an episode as a guest commentator. On a particular occasion he came to the arena to charge a debt that Nick had with Miss Cleo, and as Nick wouldn't pay, Mr. T beat him up and took his wallet. He was again seen in season five, looking to rough Nick up for not paying another debt.
  • Betty-Sue Olsen (voice unknown): Betty-Sue Olsen is the "third Olsen twin" who had been locked in the attic and fed fish heads because she was not as pretty as Mary-Kate and Ashley. During the fight between the two Olsen twins, Betty-Sue breaks out of her cage, goes down to the ring, and tears her sisters apart, winning the match. Later that night, she kills Jennifer Love Hewitt and chews off Scott Wolf's face after they defeat Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe.
  • Cousin Grimm (voice unknown): Cousin Grimm is made from the combination of the DNA of Bill Clinton, Bigfoot and Roseanne Barr. He fought Pierce McCrack in the episode "Freak Fights" and won by ripping out his spine. He fought Potato Khan in "Deathcon 2001" and he sliced Potato into several small Khans which he ate. However, the pieces of Khan then got into Grimm's brain, and when trying to get them out by bashing his head with a club, Grimm bashed his own head to pieces.
  • Pierce McCrack (voice unknown): He is made from the combination of the DNA of Dennis Rodman, Trent Reznor and Keith Flint. He only fought once, against Cousin Grimm in the episode "Freak Fights". Cousin Grimm killed him by ripping out his spine.
  • Beni Trauma (voice unknown): Beni Trauma is one of the freaks of Stone Cold, he is made from the DNA of chef Emeril Lagasse and action star Jackie Chan. He fought once against Potato Khan in episode "Battle Of The Heavy Metal Maniacs". He was about to defeat Khan by cooking him but he used a rare special sauce which made Khan sprout tentacles, after which Khan ripped off Beni's head. For thr rest of the episode Khan cooked parts of Beni's body and gave them to a kid in the audience who was having a birthday party so he can eat them.
  • Potato Khan (voice unknown): Potato Kahn is made from the combination of the DNA of Joe Pesci, Genghis Khan and a potato. He fought against Beni Trauma in the episode "Battle Of The Heavy Metal Maniacs" and won by sprouting some tentacles and ripping Beni's head off. In the episode "Deathcon 2001" he fought Cousin Grimm, who turned him into several small Potato Khans with a cheese grater and ate him. The small Potato Khans then got in Grimm's brain and Grimm broke his head apart in an attempt to get them out of his head. He is also seen in episode "Blink 182 vs. 98 Degrees", chained to the wall of the Celebrity Deathmatch basement.
  • Don King (Kerry Williams): Don King appears several times in the first season. He is killed several times as a running gag, and his character talks using long speech-like sentences. During the first episode, Mills Lane takes a wrench from Tim Allen and flings it into the audience and it goes through Don's head. In the next episode, Arnold Schwarzenegger flicks a cigar into the audience and it lands in the Don's hair and he burns to death. In episode 3, the Loch Ness Monster (much to Mike Tyson's content) slashes Don King in half with its tail. Finally, in the penultimate episode of season 1, Zatar the Alien possesses Don King and kills him. Later on in the series during episode "High-Tech Fighting", Don King fights against Donald Trump, only to lose and die for good.

History

Celebrity Deathmatch started as a short that featured serial killer Charles Manson and shock rocker Marilyn Manson fighting to the death. Deathmatch was brought back in 1998 for MTV's Super Bowl XXXII halftime special, which became the most highly rated special in the history of MTV. Just three months later, Celebrity Deathmatch had entered MTV's main lineup. The show was popular enough for show creator Eric Fogel to be named one of the most creative people in the TV industry by Entertainment Weekly.

During the next four seasons, Celebrity Deathmatch became more popular in other countries and gained viewers from all over the world, but four seasons and 75 episodes later, MTV decided to cancel the show. According to Eric Fogel, MTV thought that Deathmatch was becoming too expensive and too violent for the network, and that its ratings did not justify keeping the show on the air. In 2002, the show was canceled.

In 2006, due to popular demand, the show was revived in MTV2.

Revival

Nick and Johnny in the 2006 version of the show.

New episodes of the show, which began production in 2005, are being produced by Cuppa Coffee Studio as opposed to MTV's now-defunct animation department. The show now features an all-new voice cast and a new look. Johnny, Nick and Mills Lane have all returned, though all with new voices. Mills Lane, who used to be played by himself, is now played by Chris Edgerly due to the real Mills Lane's 2002 stroke. Stone Cold Steve Austin may not return on the new version of the show. Debbie Matenopoulos has been replaced by Tally Wong. Eric Fogel didn't get very involved with this season due to his involvement on his new show Starveillance for the E! network. The show is currently directed by Jack Fletcher and Dave 'Canadian' Thomas.

Clips of the new Celebrity Deathmatch are available at Cuppa Coffee Animation's official web site at Cuppacoffee.com, as well as at MTV2.com. For this version of the show, the animators are bringing back various celebrities that were originally killed off years ago (though in the original, celebrities would sometimes return from the dead, such as John Tesh appearing as a guest co-host who desperately wanted to be part of the show, despite the fact that he fought and lost to David Hasselhoff earlier in the series or David Letterman, who married Nick's ex-wife despite the fact that he was crushed by the Loch Ness Monster earlier in the series).

It can be seen that some of the audience members are celebrities used in the older seasons of Celebrity Deathmatch. In one fight, you can see in the audience Macaulay Culkin from his fight against Haley Joel Osment. Other noticeable celebrities are Ozzy Osbourne, Whitney Houston, Farrah Fawcett, 'N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick, Eriq La Salle, Mr. T, Ricky Martin, Nick Nolte, Dana Carvey as Garth Algar and The Church Lady one of the Olsen twins, Ben Affleck, Billy Blanks, Daniel Baldwin, Rob Zombie, and Rob Schneider.

Johnny Gomez seems to have developed a hatred for Tally Wong over the course of the season.

During the 2006 season, fans were able to vote on MTV2.com for future matches by choosing one of three matches and by sending a write-in request. The following are the winners of the polls:

The time machine

During Season 2, guest commentator and Deathmatch science and weapons expert Stone Cold Steve Austin developed a time machine to make possible a match between Mahatma Gandhi and Genghis Khan. Since then, the Celebrity Deathmatch time machine has been a fixture of the show, having been used to revive long-deceased celebrities to participate in Deathmatch, such as:

Guests

Throught the show commentators Nick and Johnny bring guests to be referees or guest commentate with them and here's how it goes:

Guest commentators

Nick Diamond and Johnny Gomez are always the CDM commentators of each fight, but in some occasions some guest celebrity commentators are brought to help commentate with Nick and Johnny depending the occasion, these guest commenttors are:

Guest referees

Mills Lane is the official referee of Celebrity Deathmatch, but on some occasions, there have been guest referees to take Mills Lane's place:

Criticism

Since the beginning of its run, Celebrity Deathmatch has been criticized for being too violent and ridiculing celebrities. In early beginnings of the show Kathie Lee Gifford made a complaint to the show creator Eric Fogel because the show was "inhuman" (rumors spread saying that she was just unhappy about the way she was defeated in the show by Howard Stern). Janeane Garofalo was also unhappy with the show when they showed on screen, without her permission, how she would look if she lost fifty pounds. The show was labeled insensitive when the father of Compton rapper The Game told Playahata.com in late March 2007 he was not happy with Celebrity Deathmatch showing his son being killed by bullets. The father said he was thinking of writing a protest letter to the network because the episode hit very close to home since the rapper's older brother, Jevon Taylor, a Crip gang member, was shot and killed at a gas station.[1]
