Information about Bet Awards
The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on BET.
The nominations for the BET Awards '07 were announced live from Hollywood at a press conference and live on BET's video countdown show, "106 & Park" on Wednesday, May 16, 2007. Tichina Arnold, 50 Cent, T.I., and Robin Thicke announced the nominations in Hollywood at the press conference.
On June 26, 2007, Mo'Nique hosted the ceremonies. The "106 & Park: Live from the Red Carpet" pre-show was hosted by Terrence J & Rocsi for their first time. Diana Ross was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award this year and Don Cheadle was honored with the Humanitarian Award. T.I., Robin Thicke, Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland were among the number of performers. Fans were able text their vote for which of 50 Cent's recent singles he will perform. They were given a choice between "Straight to the Bank" and "Amusement Park". "Amusement Park" received the most votes, therefore that was what 50 Cent performed, along with Tony Yayo.
Beyoncé received the most amount of nominations, earning 6, one for "Best Female R&B Artist", another for the "Viewer's Choice Award", two for "Best Collaboration" ("Déjà Vu" and "Upgrade U", both featuring Jay-Z), and two more for "Video of the Year" ("Irreplaceable" and "Beautiful Liar" with Shakira). Ciara, Akon, and Jennifer Hudson received three nominations each, coming in behind Beyoncé.
Mo'Nique and several similar-sized dancers performed Beyoncé & Jay-Z's single, Deja Vu. Mo'Nique did something similar at the 2004 BET Awards, where she performed "Crazy in Love", another Beyoncé & Jay-Z collaboration. Later on in the show, Beyoncé performed "Get Me Bodied", with Kelly Rowland and Eve performing "Like This" directly after. Once Rowland finished her performance, Destiny's Child (with the addition of Solange Knowles) made a very brief appearance dancing.
The same rules apply for the BET Award for Best Male R&B Artist. Anthony Hamilton, Usher, R. Kelly, and Musiq Soulchild have been nominated for the most BET Awards for Best Male R&B Artist.
In 2007 there was no award category for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, there was only the BET Award for Best Male Artist which was renamed the BET Award for Best Hip-Hop Artist. The reason is because most female rappers had not released any promotional material, mainly due to recording albums, criminal charges, and legal disputes.
The BET Lifetime Achievement Award is given a R&B, pop, and soul artist or group who has been a recording artist (or group) for numerous years and is known for their notable contributions to the music industry. The honoree is paid tribute to by current popular singers who perform the honoree's most recognized songs. The honoree will usually perform themselves after being paid tribute.
In 2002, at the second annual BET Awards the category for the BET Award Humanitarian Award was created. The Humanitarian Award is given a celebrity philanthropist who donates their time and money to a charitable cause.
