Aquarius is an astrological sign, which is associated with the constellation Aquarius. Under the tropical zodiac, Aquarius is occupied by the Sun from January 20 to February 18.<ref name="Kirk" /> Under the sidereal zodiac, Aquarius is occupied currently from February 13 to March 14<ref name="VPC" /><ref name="mybirthchart" />.

The corresponding month in the Babylonian calendar is Arax Šabaṭu "the destroying month", also called arax arrat zunne, "month of the curse of rains", associated with the Flood. It is dedicated to Ramman, the storm god. The zodiacal sign of this month was called GU = Assyrian , the name of a dry-measure. This was associated with Hebrew kad "pitcher, jar", presumably in reference to the urn of Aquarius. The name Aquarius of this sign is of occidental origin, while Babylonian astrology symbolizes it with a simple amphora, in reference to the apsu (diluvial) region of the sky.[7]

Mythology

In mythology Aquarius is often associated with the mythological figure of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, from the Greek myth of the Trojan War. Aquarius is also associated with the Greco-Roman god Uranus/Caelus and sometimes the god Cronus/Saturn. In Grecian mythology, Aquarius is the constellation that was once Ganymede, cupbearer of the gods.Medieval astrology associated the sign with Saturn, together with Capricorn qualifying it as cold and dry. Hans Talhoffer in his 1459 astrological treatise has (on Saturn):
dz sind sine zaichen der stainbock der wasserman die sind kalt und trucken an irer nattur und glichent sich dem melancholicoß an siner nattur
"these are its signs: Capricorn and Aquarius, these are cold and dry by nature and correspond to the melancholic temper." (Thott 290 2º 143r)

In some cosmologies, Aquarius is associated with the classical element Air, and thus called an Air Sign[8] (with Libra and Gemini). It is also one of the four Fixed signs<ref name="Zadkiel" /> (along with Leo, Scorpio, and Taurus). Its polar opposite is Leo.

Aquarius is the domicile of Saturn<ref name="Roback" /> (since its discovery Uranus has been considered Aquarius' ruling or co-ruling planet by many modern astrologers[9]). Aquarius is traditionally thought to be ruled by the planet Saturn, but in more recent years many astrologers have labeled Uranus as the ruler or co-ruler of Aquarius<ref name="Moy" />, attributing the erraticism associated with the Sign to the planet's influence.

The Indian equivalent of Aquarius is Kumbha; the Chinese equivalent is the Tiger.

Characteristics

In modern astrology individuals born under this sign are popularly thought to have a unique, quirky, creative, honest, and challenging sign. The Aquarius person is unconventional, detached, supportive, inquisitive, entertaining, playful, flirting, freedom-loving, open-minded, liberal, understanding, caring, tolerant, fruitful, progressive, stimulating, nocturnal, independent intellectual, objective, individualistic, inventive, sophisticated, future-oriented, friendship-oriented, humanitarian, cause-oriented and believes in groups and society. The Aquarius individual is prone to perverse, seeking to do things their own way even if that happens to be more difficult than the "normal" way of doing things. They can also sometimes be unpredictable, dogmatic, over-permissive, aloof, eccentric, elitist, unable to commit, intolerant, fickle, and be prone to rebelliousness, coldness, being erratic, and impracticality. Aquarius can exhibit a distant quality, as if they are lost in their thoughts, with no attention to spare for the humdrum activity going on in mundane reality.

Relations with other element signs

Air signs are seen as complementary to fire signs because they provide the ideas that allow the fire signs to carry out their action. However, it is often thought that fire signs are too flagrant and impatient for the air signs to tolerate permanently. Air signs are supposed to more or less understand earth signs because they share a basically rational nature. However, whilst air signs are supposed to admire earth signs' will to achieve, they supposedly find them too timid, pessimistic, undemonstrative, and cautious, and the earth signs, though attracted by the air signs' unique thoughts, find them overwhelmingly unrealistic and flippant. Water signs are believed to be much too passionate and emotionally deep for air signs' flighty, flirtatious nature; indeed, astrology believes air signs hate water signs as too subjective, secretive, and illogical. For their part water signs supposedly deride air signs as emotionally shallow, excessively concerned with worldly pleasure, and uncaring towards others. Though, sometimes an air sign can balance out the traits of a water sign (thus creating a great friendship). Air signs will find themselves most compatible with fire signs, who share the similar traits of being positive, extroverted, outgoing, and fun-loving. Fire signs may not be as objective as air signs, as air signs may not be as passionate as fire signs, but they can generally adapt to each other's ways, and find they have a lot of different traits to offer in fulfilling one another.

Occupations

Suitable occupations are where the progressive mental qualities can be developed, preferable in a group; such as doctor, nurse, scientist, photographer, writer, broadcaster, publisher, social worker, electronics, aviation, music and computer industries.

Body and health

Physically, individuals born under the sign of Aquarius supposedly tend to have fairly nice, finely chiseled features and a slender figure. The males are often said to tend to be handsome but somewhat soft in features. In appearance, females are said to be somewhat broad-shouldered and strong looking but fair also. Each astrological sign is assigned a part of the body, viewed as the seat of its power. Aquarius rules the circulatory system[10] as well as the ankles<ref name="Heindel" />. The symbol for Aquarius is the water bearer.

In medical astrology and in terms of anatomy, Aquarius is said to rule the legs from knees to ankles and the circulation of blood.

Exaltation

Aquarius: Without doubt more fruitful than barren.

Miscellaneous

In terms of mundane or political astrology, Aquarius is linked with Sweden, Canada, Ethiopia and Poland[11].
