The story revolves around the adventures of a young orphan (played by Fredric March) in the early 19th century. It was adapted by Sheridan Gibney and Milton Krims, and directed by Mervyn LeRoy, with uncredited direction by Michael Curtiz.
The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In addition, Gale Sondergaard won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold for the picture's musical score, parts of which he incorporated into his Violin Concerto.
