TV.com summary

All of Us was an African-American sitcom that premiered on the now-defunct UPN network in the United States on September 16, 2003, where it aired for its first three seasons. October 1 2006, the show moved to The CW, a new network formed by the merger of UPN and The WB, where it aired for one more season before being cancelled on May 16, 2007[1].

All of Us was created and executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, Betsy Borns, and Will Smith and is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Overbrook Productions (owned and operated by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith).

Reruns of the series will begin airing every Monday-Friday at 3 PM on The CW Daytime in late September.

Effective August 28, The CW will no longer air reruns of All of Us during primetime. Another episode of Everybody Hates Chris will take its place.

Premise

Plots revolve around a blended family in Los Angeles. Robert James (Duane Martin) is a divorced TV entertainment reporter with a young son, Bobby (Khamani Griffin). He is engaged to Tia Jewel (Elise Neal), who lives with him. He shares custody of his son with his no-nonsense ex-wife Neesee (Lisaraye McCoy), with whom he shares a tenuously friendly relationship for the sake of their son. Tia eventually leaves, and a newly single Robert is soon faced with a situation wherein Neesee must move in with him and Bobby temporarily after her apartment building is destroyed by fire. Robert's friend Dirk Black (Tony Rock) is Robert's friend and producer of his television show.

Episodes

Elise Neal's departure

It is said2 that Elise Neal was being paid approximately $5,000 per episode compared to Lisaraye McCoy's purported $20,000-per-episode salary, and that Ms. Neal expressed concern over that pay differential to the show's producers. Ms. Neal cited her considerable body of previous work compared to that of Ms. McCoy, whom she felt was less experienced. She therefore couldn't understand why Lisaraye was being paid that amount of money, particularly since the show was struggling financially. No compromise was reached, and Elise walked. At this point the show seemed a likely candidate for cancellation, but producer Will Smith's industry clout was enough to encourage the network to keep the series in their lineup, and the show was moved from its Tuesday anchor spot to a Monday lead-out spot.

Ratings and broadcast history

All of Us debuted on UPN on September 16, 2003. The series aired on Tuesdays at 8:30/7:30c for its first two seasons.

For the 2005-06 season, UPN moved All of Us to Mondays at 8:30/7:30c, airing after One on One. All of Us was originally cancelled at the end of the 2005-06 television season; however, the series was resurrected and placed on The CW's fall 2006 lineup, airing on Sundays at 7:30/6:30c after Everybody Hates Chris. Due to lackluster ratings, the show (along with the rest of The CW's "urban" sitcoms) moved back to its former Monday night timeslot in early October 2006.

During its single season on The CW, All of Us averaged around 2.74 million viewers per week. It was the fourth most watched sitcom (out of five, excluding the prime time encores of Reba) on The CW throughout the 2006-07 season. All of Us finished the season at #140 in the ratings, surpassing only The Game (which, surprisingly, was renewed for the 2007-08 season), America's Next Top Model (encore presentations) and the cancelled Runaway. The show was regularly beaten by fellow CW sitcoms Reba, Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends and all of the CW drama and reality series (excluding encores).

On Tuesday, May 15, 2007, Variety.com reported The CW's cancellation of All of Us. For the 2007-08 season, All of Us was replaced on their primetime schedule with the new comedy Aliens in America.

On Monday, September 24, 2007, reruns of All of Us joined The CW Daytime's afternoon lineup. The show currently airs weekdays at 3 pm. All of Us can also be seen on TV One in many areas of the United States. On a new note, All of Us is shown on the African continent as well. It premiers on the South African channel SABC1 (South African Broadcasting Channel)on a continual weekly bases. It is predominantly viewed by people of color in the country.

Trivia

  • The N Word (Season 3)... This episode started a trend that aired on Girlfriends and Half & Half. All the episodes featured some Star Trek joke. Levar Burton and his role as Commander La Forge is mentioned after Bobby watched Roots. Sulu is mentioned on Half & Half and Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) and Uhura on Girlfriends.
  • During its run on UPN, All of Us used a full opening credit sequence featuring clips of the cast members from the series inside photograph-like frames laid on a table. This sequence was shortened and the theme song was sped up slightly after Elise Neal, Terri J. Vaughn and James Vincent left the show. When the series moved to The CW for its final season, the opening sequence was dropped in favor of just the show's title card, and the cast members were credited in the opening tag scenes instead.
  • All of Us is the only Monday-night sitcom from The CW's 2006-07 schedule that was not renewed for the 2007-08 season.
  • All of Us is one of the two CW series that came from UPN to be cancelled after the 2006-07 season. (Veronica Mars is the other.)
