The station is now broadcasting from a transmitter in Werribee and its studios are located in South Melbourne, sharing facilities with 3EE. Owned and operated by Southern Cross Broadcasting, the station's program format is primarily news, talk and sport.
Ratings and market position
3AW has long been the top-rating radio station in Melbourne, although its Australian football coverage - once indomitable - has recently begun to lose its audience and has caused the station to fall to last in the football ratings. In the October 2007 ratings survey, 3AW was the highest rating station in Melbourne for breakfast, mornings, overnight and weekends, but Gold 104 was the best rating for afternoons and Fox FM for drive.
Schedule
On weekday mornings, Ross Stevenson and John Burns present a light-hearted breakfast show that includes Melbourne's most listened to radio segment, Rumour File. From 8.30am Neil Mitchell presents a current affairs program with a strong talkback format, together with interviews. Regular guests include Prime Minister John Howard, Treasurer Peter Costello and Victorian Premier John Brumby.
After the noon news, Ernie Sigley presents lifestyle-based programming.
From 4.00pm Derryn Hinch presents a mildly-controversial drivetime show. At 6.00pm Gerard Healy and Dwayne Russell host a top rating sport based show called Sports Today. Hosting the evening slot (8.00pm to midnight), Nightline, are television pioneers Philip Brady and Bruce Mansfield.
Keith McGowan hosts the overnight shift from midnight through to 5.30am.
