The women in my family (myself included) aren’t known for our organizational ability—far from it—but my niece Heather is about the most organized person I know. And the skills she learned, she learned in kindergarten. She’d come home with papers she’d done in school, all tucked neatly into color-coded folders; as she got older, her school books wore book covers, also color-coded to match notebooks and files. She carried her organizational skills through at home as well; she had a “My Pony” collection, kept neatly organized on shelves, and her clothes closet, once she was in charge of it, was also neat and well planned. And now that she’s a young adult with a responsible job and her own home, she approaches her work and home life with the same flair for order.
For many years now, children have followed the tradition of trick or treating whenever Halloween night comes up. That is, they go from house to house in the scariest or cutest costumes they can think of and ask for candy from their neighbors to put into their jack o lantern of goodies. Last night, I took down an old favorite, the ABC Floor Puzzle from Mudpuppy Press, to play with my 22-month-old. The puzzle is made up of 24 big 8" square pieces that fit easily together and are easily manouverable by a little tyke. The box says 3+, but he enjoyed seeing the picture come together and was pretty darn happy when he could fit one piece to another. And I found it sufficiently stimulating to enjoy spending seven or eight minutes down on the floor with it. Check out Mudpuppy's other puzzles, too - they are well made and designed, and they come in boxes that make storage easy.
I would urge anyone who has suffered any kind of abuse be it sexual or other to seek help and not try to deal with it alone. It is one of those things that just as you think you have dealt with it, it comes back to haunt you, I speak from bitter experience believe me.
I sometimes feel as though I have missed out on my teenage years because I wasn’t like my friends going out to parties and having boyfriends. It was tough trying to build up the courage to ask for permission to got the annual school disco and knowing my dad would probably say no. Then all my friends would ask why I wasn’t going and I would make some excuse which they clearly didn’t believe, some of them thought I was weird and called me a daddies girl, if only they knew the truth. When I really nice boy asked me out I had to say no or only see him at school which most boys didn’t want so I lost out on many friendships both male and female.
