Can You Diet Successfully?

It seems like every time you pick up a magazine or turn on the television, somebody is extolling the virtues of the latest, greatest diet plan. The frustrating part is that so often different diet plans give completely principles for you to follow. One says to avoid carbs, the next to avoid fats, others talk about counting calories, still others aim to eat a balance of healthy foods. It's enough to make you grab the biggest bar of chocolate you can find and forget about dieting.

But the truth is that you can successfully lose weight, as long as you follow some basic guidelines. Most of the fad diets are just that - fads. Maybe you'll lose some weight quickly, which is great. The problem is that at some point you have to live your life, and to do that you need to follow sensible eating principles that can help you maintain the weight you want.

The thing about diets is that they're mostly based on excluding certain types of foods. The problem with fad diets is the rules are so strict that it can drive you crazy trying to work out what you can and can't eat. You might also find that you're deficient in certain essential vitamins and minerals. So instead of worrying so much about following a diet plan to the letter, it's often easier to realize that you simply need to look at what you're eating, making a few adjustments, do some more exercise, and you'll start losing weight.

So let's take a look at the types of foods you should stay away from. Here's a few to get you started:

- Fried foods. The oil may be drained off, but the food is still full of it.

- Chocolate. I know, I know, but at the very least make sure it's a rare treat. No more daily snacks!

- Alcohol. Not just because of the calories, but having a few drinks makes it likely you'll make poor food choices.

- Eggs. Particularly not fried eggs. Only have an egg a few times a week, maximum. Definitely not daily.

There are other things you can do to make your diet plan more successful. Always aim to eat at least three good meals each day. Any diet that suggests you should skip meals is a bad idea. Your body needs the regular input of energy to function efficiently, and skipping a meal simply means that your metabolism gets confused and may actually instruct your body to retain more calories from each meal, just in case it's needed. This is particularly true of breakfast - it's essential to get your metabolism up and running every day.

Aim to eat a wide variety of healthy foods from all the main food groups every day. Not only will this allow you to eat lots of interesting meals, it also dramatically lowers the risk of developing any deficiencies. One of the big complaints about diet plans is that they're boring, and that's why people end up breaking the diet.

Finally, try and eat as many fresh foods as possible. Vegetables are better for you if they're fresh, and even better raw. If you want to cook them, experiment with cooking methods that don't destroy too much of their nutritional value, such as steaming. Always wash your vegetables to remove pesticides, or better still, buy pesticide free or organic varieties.

Maintaining a healthy weight level doesn't have to be a major ordeal, but it does require you to think seriously about the food you eat on a daily basis. Cut out some of the worst foods, eat a wide variety of good foods, and you'll be surprised how much easier it is to stick to your diet plan.
