How do you define an Icon? In technical terms, an Icon is defined as a small picture that is meant to represent a file or a program. Well, then how do you define a buddy icon? It is a term that is synonymous with AOL users, AOL Instant messaging users rather. A buddy icon is a small image that is added to the lower left hand corner of your AOL messenger to represent your buddies. The Buddy Icon has become a huge rage in the US and all other countries which support the use of AOL instant Messenger.
Properties of Buddy Icons
According to AOL, any image format can be used as a buddy icon as long as it is below the size limit of 7168 bytes. The maximum dimensions allowed are 50 pixels. Other than these two restrictions on the size there are no other restrictions as far as the buddy icon is concerned. It can be flashy, with text, without text, glowing, animated or just about any way you want. There are even a horde of websites which allow you to access, browse and download buddy icons from hundreds of categories. These sites can be categorized into free sites or paid sites. The free ones are more popular but there are professionals who use the paid sites as well to download buddy icons.

Now there is specialized software being developed only to help create buddy icons easily. Such is the craze and demand of buddy icons that users want to create and use newer ones everyday.
